Born in 1961, Érik Canuel directed his first short film at the age of 20, before becoming a production assistant on many feature films and commercials. After Film Studies at Concordia University, he co-founded Kino Film and took over the music-video section, then moved over to advertising. In 1997, he directed three episodes of the television series “The Hunger,” and later five episodes of the very popular series “Fortier 1” in 1999, for which he was nominated for Best Direction at the Gemini Awards. He has since directed many episodes of series inspired by genre movies. At the Genie Awards in 2000, he won the award for Best Docudrama Short for “Hemingway: A Portrait” (in the Imax format), as well as the award for Best 2D feature for “Miami Adventure Imax Day.””
Érik Canuel’s features are always great successes, both popular and critical. He has always defended his position as a genre film director. As a matter of fact, each one of his films reflect a particular genre: dramatic thriller for “La loi du cochon” (2001), romantic comedy for “Nez-Rouge” (2003), criminal drama for “Le dernier tunnel” (2004), and period piece for “Le survenant” (2005). His fifth feature, “Good Cop, Bad Cop,” will be released in the spring of 2006.

We first noticed Masbourian as a 20-year-old talent in the prestigious travelling documentary competition Course Europe-Asie 1990-1991, where he won third place. He then worked as a director at SRC, reporter-director at TQS and TVA, co-host at TVA and host at Radio-Québec. After two years at MusiquePlus, Masbourian was involved with “La fin du monde est à 7 heures” (TQS) in 1997. Since 2000, he is the host for “La revanche des nerdz” at Z, for which he has been nominated for Best Host at the Gemini Wards in 2001 and 2002. He also participates in “Le grand blond avec un show sournois” (TVA), “Flash” (TQS) and “Informan” (SRC) as a reporter-director. In addition, he directed a few commercials, one for which he won a Coq d’or from the Publicité Club de Montréal and a Prix d’argent from the Mondial de la publicité francophone. He will soon direct his first feature, “Mourir, c’est partir un peu,” and is working on his first screenplay, “Gros tas.”
