Best friends Woodrow (debuting writer/director Evan Glodell) and Aiden (Tyler Dawson) spend all of their free time building and testing dangerous flamethrowers and bitchin’, ROAD WARRIOR-inspired muscle cars in preparation for the end of civilization. We never see the slackers holding down actual jobs, but they love to swill beer (even at breakfast) and hang out in their dingy Los Angeles home, waiting for the day they can take their killer vehicle out for a real spin. Then Woodrow and a charismatic young woman named Milly (Jessie Wiseman) meet “cute” — eating live crickets at a dive-bar competition. The two fall head over heels, and the formerly insular Woodrow and Aiden soon integrate into a new group of pals, setting off on a journey of love and hate, betrayal, infidelity and extreme violence more devastating and fiery than any of their end-of-the-world fantasies. Woodrow and Aiden may be prepared for the global apocalypse, but the emotional apocalypse that awaits them is another story.

Loglines do their best to sum up new movies in a couple of succinct sentences or draw comparisons to past classics (“It’s CITIZEN KANE meets PIRANHA!”), but you won’t find an easy way to peg the wholly original BELLFLOWER in just a couple of lines. Utilizing a bit of the sometimes-maligned mumblecore aesthetic, the movie exists on the cutting edge of independent cinema, where nothing fits into tidy little packages. We can dig watching the story’s two Mad Max mavens tooling around in their customized 1972 Buick Skylark (nicknamed Medusa, which Glodell built and designed himself, along with a special handmade camera!), which could easily take on Lord Humungus and sports two fuel-injected exhaust flamethrowers, smoke screen, “custom apocalypse exhaust system,” self-contained oxygen supply for chemical or underwater warfare, and more. In addition to the cool cars and natural slacker talk, what sets BELLFLOWER apart is the romantic subplot between Woodrow and Milly, how it affects the relationship between the guys and how a tumultuous speed bump between the lovers tears everything asunder. The intensely personal BELLFLOWER will drive you straight into the heart of darkness.
