“A bitter, bloody treat for the black of heart” – Jessica Klang, THE PLAYLIST

“A father must avenge his son.” While these words have been spoken often on film, they have yet to be answered with more darkly comic consequences than in IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE. A blood-soaked snowy Norwegian landscape provides the backdrop to this carnage-filled pitch-black comedy from director Hans Petter Moland (ABERDEEN, ZERO KELVIN, A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN). Local snowplow driver and community leader Nils (Stellan Skarsgard, in his crackling fourth collaboration with Moland) has just accepted his award for Citizen of the Year when he learns that his son has been found dead of a heroin overdose. Unrelenting in his belief that there is more to his son’s death than meets the eye, Nils embarks on a deliriously bleak rampage against the criminal underworld he blames for his son’s demise.

What follows is a nuanced examination of the dynamics at work between the Norwegian, Swedish and Serbian worlds, offset by the sardonic clinical precision of Skarsgard’s lone man on a mission. Nils soon discovers himself at the centre of a bloody conflict between Serbian drug dealers and a sociopathic criminal overlord known as “The Count,” who answers to a shadowy Godfather type figure (Bruno Ganz). As vengeance stories go, IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE has less in common with the slick paternal rage-fueled narrative of TAKEN than with the unaffected cold-blooded retribution of the Coen Brothers’ MILLERS CROSSING. Screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson’s compelling script is populated throughout with bursts of impossibly dry humour that rise up at wonderfully inappropriate junctures. Beautifully shot by Philip Ogaard, with a briskly paced narrative that builds to a brilliantly plotted exercise in futility, IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE is the must-see European action thriller of the year.
