In other words, set our minds’ eyes on fire and we’ll do everything possible to get your film seen.
Now that the 15th Anniversary edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival has finally wound down, the prints have all been sent back to their homes at the 4 corners of the globe, the tireless volunteers finally get to sleep a few hours a night and the creative team is already plunging into programming for 2012, I just wanted to give you a heads up that Spectacular Optical, Fantasia’s web magazine (www.spectacularoptical.ca), will resume monthly publication on September 1st, and will publish on the first of every month going forward.

For updates on Fantasia-related happenings throughout the year, please refer to Spectacular Optical, as well as our Facebook Page (for news) and Facebook Group (to get invitations to events delivered to your inbox).
And stay tuned for the September issue, which features an exclusive interview with Guy Maddin about his ongoing ‘hauntings’ project, an interview with Josh MacDonald about his Canadian horror sleeper hit The Corridor, an article on Italian Fumetti comics (and the films they spawned), DVD, book and soundtrack reviews, local genre event listings and much more!

“With bits of the film taking place within Second Life itself, it’s an all-too-modern and off-the-wall picture with an equally quirky finale. So it makes complete sense that the Fantasia Festival would feature Wiltshire’s debut on August 7th.”

Don’t miss it!”

Montreal, Sunday, August 7, 2011 – The 15th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival has drawn to a close and our team is delighted by the great success of this year’s edition. As a stand-out event on the genre festival circuit since 1996, Fantasia is pleased to see its fan base continue to grow ever-more enthusiastic and keen to discover extraordinary films. The final audience numbers are yet to be confirmed, but we can already announce that Fantasia has welcomed more than 100,000 audience members! We would like to extend warm thanks to the 150 international directors, actors and producers who came to present their films at the fest and to the 50 industry members who contributed to this year’s edition. Fantasia’s overwhelming success is due in large part to the valuable contribution and hard work of more than 160 media representatives in attendance, with at least 40 of them hailing from countries as diverse as the USA, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Morocco, and Denmark.

The festival opened with a bang with the Canadian premiere of RED STATE by director Kevin Smith. This was only the first in a long line of sensational special events that took place over the course of the festival. Among those was the incredible homage to the great John Landis (BURKE AND HARE), marked by the presentation of Fantasia’s new trophy “Le Cheval Noir.” Mirroring our strong launch, the festival closed with the Canadian premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. Other memorable events included: the homage to André Link and John Dunning with a retrospective at the Cinémathèque québécoise; a master class with award-winning South Korean filmmaker Ryoo Seung-wan (THE UNJUST, CRYING FIST); a spotlight on the films of Adam Wingard that included the world premiere of his latest work, WHAT FUN WE WERE HAVING: 4 STORIES ABOUT DATE RAPE; a special live conversation between Robin Hardy (THE WICKER MAN) and Richard Stanley (HARDWARE); THE FP after-party, with a Dance Dance Revolution challenge issued by Brandon and Jason Trost; the official program launch and outdoor projections hosted in collaboration with la Société des arts technologiques (SAT); and the breathtaking presentation of Gabriel Thibaudeau’s live score by a 30 person orchestra of the 1925 silent masterpiece, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Place des Arts.

The 15th anniversary programming was our broadest and most exciting yet. More than 85% of our feature length films were premieres (114 out of a total of 134). Among this impressive selection from more than 25 different countries were 19 world premieres, including Chris Sivertson’s BRAWLER, Carl Tibbetts’ RETREAT, Robin Hardy’s THE WICKER TREE, the hotly anticipated 7-filmmaker/4-country omnibus film THE THEATRE BIZARRE, Steven Quale’s FINAL DESTINATION 5, Filip Tegstedt’s MARIANNE, Yudai Yamaguchi’s DEADBALL and Jesse T. Cook’s MONSTER BRAWL. Also memorable were William Eubank’s LOVE, and Noboru Iguchi’s TOMIE UNLIMITED, which were only 2 of 6 international premieres. Also worth noting were the 14 North American premieres, including Johnny To’s DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART; Herman Yau’s IP MAN: THE LEGEND IS BORN; Andy Fetscher’s URBAN EXPLORER; Paul Campion’s THE DEVIL’S ROCK; and F.J. Ossang’s DHARMA GUNS. Fantasia fans were also treated to Xavier Gens’ THE DIVIDE, Mike Cahill’s ANOTHER EARTH and Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales’ RABIES: 2 films out of 48 which had Canadian premieres at the festival. Joe Cornish’s ATTACK THE BLOCK, Evan Kelly’s THE CORRIDOR and Jan Švankmajer’s SURVIVING LIFE (THEORY AND PRACTICE) were 3 exciting films among 27 to have their Quebec premieres at Fantasia.

The festive atmosphere of Fantasia’s 15th edition will live on for several directors whose films were picked up at the festival. Jason and Brandon Trost are celebrating their new deal with Drafthouse Films (an affiliate of the Alamo Drafthouse chain of cinemas) for the distribution of THE FP. Pat Tremblay, the Montreal filmmaker of HELLACIOUS ACRES: THE CASE OF JOHN GLASS, is also celebrating his new contract for a theatrical, DVD and VOD release in the United States with The Collective and Bloody Disgusting Selects. Several other titles launched at the festival are currently in negotiations for acquisition.

The juries have finished deliberating on this year’s competitions and are pleased to announce the following winners:

DJ XL5’s Mexican Zappin’ Party

World Premiere
Sunday August 7th, 2011 at 9 pm – Concordia Hall Theatre
1455 boul. de Maisonneuve West

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLLG1PZVed0&feature=related

In 2010, with his BOLLYWOOD ZAPPIN’ PARTY, DJ XL5 launched a new series of homages dedicated to the genre cinema of different nations, allowing him to highlight the evolution and current state of cinema in a given country. DJ XL5 now invites you to discover the cinema of Mexico, from its golden age to today. It’s nothing less than a full-on filmic fiesta rounding up trailers and scenes from over 60 movies from then and now. On the Mexican menu are zany situations, rock ’n’ roll comedies, horror flicks, slo-mo shoot-outs, masked wrestlers, a mountain of firearms, monsters both snappy and crappy and, of course, big moustaches galore. This program celebrates the best and the worst (and the best of the worst!) of Mexican film. It’s a love letter with a subjective take on the topic, emphasizing productions that have caught DJ XL5’s eye over the almost two years he has invested in cultivating this project. The enthusiastic help of DJ Dubious was essential in developing this Mexican Zappin’ Party.

The show is divided into five distinct sections — retro comedies, the golden age of horror, masked wrestlers, contemporary horror and narco-cinema. In the first of these, you’ll find plenty of resolutely kitschy musical comedies. The classic horror segment showcases a series of movies that mixed the monster mash of Universal, the Hammer style and the notions of Italy’s Mario Bava. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, giant gorillas, psycho killers and other denizens of the dark, all with that distinctive Mexican touch. Here’s your chance to familiarize yourself with the work of directors like Benito Alazraki, Rafael Baledón, René Cardona, Fernando Méndez, Rafael Portillo and Chano Urueta. Obviously, when we get to the masked wrestlers, you’re guaranteed the presence of El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras and other champions of the ring — and of justice! The narco-cinema section highlights a number of action flicks with a streak of sympathy for the country’s drug cartels and street gangs. Blazing bullets and bikini girls, ballistic bloodbaths and tricked-out trucks, and plenty of cowboy hats are on tap in a strain of cinema calling to mind Brian De Palma’s SCARFACE if it were directed by John Woo with no budget but an overload of imagination. The paintball industry is the one making a killing on this straight-to-DVD genre, one typified so well by Robert Rodriguez’s EL MARIACHI. Speaking of sombrero-clad guitar ensembles, they’ll be on hand too — in the flesh, no less! —so lace up your lucha mask… ¡vámonos!

Co-presented with Terres en Vue / Land inSights and Blue Sunshine: Aboriginal Horror, Sci-Fi and Dark Fantasy from a singular young auteur!

Terres en Vue / Land inSights and The Fantasia International Film Festival present:
RED RIGHT HAND: THE FILMS OF JEFF BARNABY

Saturday August 6th at Blue Sunshine
3660 St Laurent, 3rd Flr
Doors: 8:15pm | Films: 9:00pm
www.blue-sunshine.com

“Jeff Barnaby says he makes “bare-knuckled cinema”… and he means it. His raw, gritty depictions of what he refers to as the post-apocalyptic culture we now live in bear little resemblance to the spiritually centred, sanitized image of Aboriginal peoples often seen in contemporary cinema.” (Indigenous Arts Network)

Program includes:

File Under Miscellaneous
(2010, 7min.)

Set in a dystopic metropolitan hellscape, a spiritually exhausted and destitute Mi’gMaq man has resolved to assimilate into the ruling culture. He visits a surgical clinic – the display window littered with skin and limb samples – and undergoes a gruesome procedure to rid him of his red skin.

The Colony
(2007, 24min.)

A bi-racial ménage a trois drenched in surrealist urban skank. Maytag, a reservation displaced Mi’gMaq, latches onto the only other Indian within light years of the city only to have her snatched away by his drug dealer and friend. Sadistically lovesick and drug addled, Maytag launches an insecticide on the cockroaches that have colonized his trailer convinced that they helped steal his fiancé. Heart broken and thoroughly crushed, he turns to his only friend for solace, his chainsaw. A demented allegory on miscegenation, the plight of modern native Canadians and their affinity for self-destruction.

From Cherry English
(2004, 10min.)

From Cherry English is a surrealist Mi’gMac allegory about the loss of language and identity to the anonymity of the urban wasteland. Traylor, a Mi’gMaq man being pulled between two worlds meets a non-native woman who sends him on a hallucinogenic journey of masochism and self discovery.

Red Right Hand
(2004, 9min.)

If you want to show skank, this is how you do it. A descent into the depths of degradation. A malicious work of cinematic beauty.

Black Out
(2003, 4min.)

Obsessed with her body, a young woman goes to violent lengths to fit into her favorite dress.

Neurotica
(student film, 2001)

A take on homophobia, a young man ventures into a public bathroom only to have his worst fears realized. Only Barnaby’s second student film, shot with a lo-fi modified analogue VHS camcorder, it is the first hint of the bio-centric horror, disdain for political-correctness and honed aesthetic that has made Barnaby one of Canada’s most promising young filmmakers.

————-

Jeff Barnaby was born on a Mi’gmaq reserve in Listujug, Quebec. He has worked as an artist, poet, author and filmmaker. His work paints a stark and scathing portrait of post-colonial aboriginal life and culture. His third short film, File Under Miscellaneous (10), is currently playing the festival circuit. His previous films include From Cherry English (04) and The Colony (07). Jeff is currently in development on two feature films, Blood Quantum & Rhymes for Young Ghouls.
